ST:DS9, “reading rainbow, hosted by garak” Show more

I wrote a blog post about why (and how) I’m posting on my own site in preference to Twitter and Instagram:

Don't tell me the American credit reporting agencies are the logical result of civilization progressing. Or our healthcare. Or our electoral system. Or this post. Nothing's inevitable.

Oh, shoot, I didn’t think about what would happen if you try to pipe colorized output (e.g. from `ls --color`) into Vim. Probably not what you’d want 😐

I’m seriously considering switching from less(1) to Vim as my pager. I’d get syntax highlighting and I wouldn’t have to remember multiple sets of mappings for moving and searching. Vim takes longer to start up but I think the difference would be negligible.

The only thing I’m concerned about is weirdness when reading from a pipe instead of a file.

Always leave the campsite cleaner than you found it, and always leave trailing commas on your lists so the next person doesn’t get an extra line in their diff.

MASTODON: content warnings are a fundamental part of our service because we believe in insulating people from stuff that could trigger a strong negative reaction

ALSO MASTODON: sure, you can have an animated GIF as your avatar

A year ago when I joined Mastodon, I promised a write-up on how was different. I always threw out the draft posts because they felt too competitive. Today I reframed it around how to find our way out of the problems with massive social networks:

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’s Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

When you store part of your database in Central Europe to improve performance, that’s Swiss sharding

The Carceral State would be a so-so band name

Looking forward to indulging my photography hobby tomorrow, where by “photography hobby” I mean “guiltily drinking in all of the flamewars about whatever Canon announces”

Starfleet UX designers learned that if they didn't make some bridge consoles explode, captains would ignore damage until the shields failed.

Happy Labor Day. Remember that it’s about social and economic justice.
